Computing at Chapel Hill

Our Vision for Computing

At Chapel Hill, we recognise that technology plays a vital role in modern education and everyday life. We are committed to providing a rich technological environment where pupils can confidently explore, create and develop the digital skills they will need for the future.

Through engaging and purposeful learning experiences, we aim to prepare our pupils to become responsible, safe and creative users of technology in an increasingly digital world.

Intent

Our Computing curriculum is designed to provide a broad, balanced and ambitious education that equips pupils with essential digital knowledge and skills.

We aim to:

  • Develop confident and capable users of technology
  • Foster creativity, problem-solving and logical thinking through coding and computational thinking
  • Provide opportunities to use a wide range of hardware and software
  • Inspire curiosity and enthusiasm for technology
  • Teach pupils how to use the internet safely, responsibly and respectfully
  • Embed core computing skills to ensure advantageous transition into secondary school

We follow the Teach Computing curriculum, carefully adapted where necessary to meet the needs of all learners and ensure progression across the school. This is supplemented with additional lessons to develop a wide variety of computing skillsets such as 3D modelling and Programming languages.

Implementation

At Chapel Hill, Computing is taught through engaging, hands-on lessons that promote independence, collaboration and creativity.

Our provision includes:

  • Weekly Computing lessons for all pupils from Year 1 to Year 6, taught in our dedicated ICT suite by the Head of Computing - lessons last 1 hour
  • Early Years pupils begin accessing Computing provision from the Summer Term
  • Online Safety is embedded within weekly lessons and reinforced throughout the year
  • An annual Internet Safety Day to promote awareness and safe digital behaviours
  • Cross-curricular opportunities that integrate technology across a range of subjects
  • Weekly sessions within lessons to develop key computing skills such as Typing, Mouse Control and Computational Thinking

In addition:

  • Every year group has access to a set of iPads equipped with educational apps
  • Augmented Reality (AR) technologies are used to enhance engagement and deepen understanding
  • Pupils’ work is stored digitally, allowing teachers to monitor progress and assess learning effectively
  • Extra-curricular Computing clubs are available for pupils in Years 1–6, encouraging children to further develop their interests and skills beyond the classroom

Impact

Our pupils enjoy Computing and develop confidence in using technology effectively and responsibly.

By the time they leave Chapel Hill, pupils:

  • Demonstrate strong coding and computational thinking skills
  • Make excellent progress across the Computing curriculum
  • Are equipped with the digital knowledge needed for the next stage of their education
  • Understand how to stay safe online and know how to report concerns appropriately
  • Show enthusiasm, resilience and independence when using technology

We strive to ensure that every child leaves Chapel Hill as a safe, confident and capable digital learner, fully prepared for life in an ever-changing technological world.
